Research Notes:
Until John III was eighteen years of age he lived at the Manor of Moreland estate. Between the ages of 18 and 22 he lived in nearby Gwynedd Township to which his father had moved the family. Sometime after he attained age 21 he returned to the Moreland-Horsham area where he served as an apprentice, presumably in the tanning of hides. He was often referred to as a 'tanner,' although most of the time he was a farmer also. At the age of 25 he moved to Chester County, a few miles southwest of Philadelphia, and worked at his trade. There he met and married Mercy Baldwin. In 1790 the family of three moved nearly a hundred miles north-westward to Catawissa, north of Harrisburg, where they purchased property. They lived at Catwissa 17 years, during which time five of their six children were born. In 1807 John Lloyd III purchased a 320 acre farm near Mt. Pleasant in the easternmost region of the new state of Ohio, in an area recently settled by Quakers, and with his family moved some 300 miles westward to the land that became the Lloyd family homestead for several ensuing generations. All of the 18th and 19th century Lloyds were Friends (Quakers). For more than a century military service by members of Friends Meetings was forbidden. There is no record of any Lloyd of this family in military service in that period. During the American Revolution any member serving in the military forces of either side was "disowned"
John married Mercy Baldwin, daughter of Joshua Baldwin and Mercy Brown, on 25 Oct 1787 in Uwchlan mm, East Caln, Chester, Pennsylvania. (Mercy Baldwin was born on 15 Jan 1761 in Mount Pleasant, Jefferson, Ohio, USA, died on 13 Dec 1835 in Mount Pleasant, Jefferson, Ohio, USA and was buried in Short Creek Burying Ground, Jefferson, Ohio.)
