bullet  General Notes:

Maddox A Southern Maryland Family
p. 221-222
Alexander, Jr., the second son, born c.1654 and died 1717, was married to Mary. He is probably the individual whose will appears in Somerset County, Maryland, records, dated April 10, 1717 and probated May 14, 1717. His will is summarized in Maryland Calendar of Wills, by Baldwin, in which he leaves to his son Lazarus the dwelling plantation of 225 acres to live upon and to have use of during the life of his mother Mary. She could be the Mary Maddox who is mentioned with her son Lazarus Maddox in the will of Mary Stevens of Somerset County, which was probated February 11, 1721, who may have been her mother. Alexander and his half-brother Lazarus Maddox appear in a list of settlers of Somerset County prior to August, 1666, living at Manokin. On November 8, 1692, Alexander was appointed to assist in dividing Somerset County into parishes. His name, and that of his half-brother Lazarus, appear on an Address of Loyalty by the residents of Somerset County to the King and Queen of England, dated November 28, 1689. (See Old Somerset on The Eastern Shore of Maryland, by Clayton Torrence.) Volume LIV of Archives of Maryland includes an interesting little comment on the times. On March 15, 1677, Alexander Maddox recorded his mark for animals, being a "crop of the left ear and under-halved of the right ear." . . . Alexander names his other three sons, and three daughters in his will. Children, all born in Somerset County, were:
a. Thomas, born January 2, 1679. . .
b. Lazarus, born c.1681
c. Sarah, born c.1682
d. Mary, born November 1, 1685
e. Alexander, born March 4, 1688
f. Anne, born April 28, 1691
g. Nathaniel, born c.1691
h. Elizabeth, born c.1693

Alexander eventually moved north (possibly after his brother Thomas had married) and settled on the Pocomoke River. . . In 1678 he was among those several hundred persons rewarded by the Maryland General Assembly with 300 pounds of tobacco for services against the Nanticoke Indians. His first son was born in Somerset in 1679.
