In August 1814 at Salt Creek, Highland Co., OH, Joseph Small was drowned while crossing a stream with horses. They became tangled in their harness and he lost his life while trying to rescue them.

In 1816, with the exception of the two older daughters, the family removed to New Garden Monthly Meeting, Indiana.

Married 9 15, 1842, to Jane Phelps, b. 7 21,1817, in Guilford Co., N.C.; her father was Samuel, mother Sarah Newby, d. 8 mo., 1855;children--Sam'l, b. 7 24, 1843; Rebecca Palmer, 11 10, 1848; Wm. H., 11 19, 1855. John Small's mother's name was Lydia Bundy.
