William Whitney born about 1754, died Jan.18, 1810. He was buried on the Whitney homestead with military honors, several complete companies attended under arms. He was a private in Capt. Joshua Whiting's company of Col. Peter Van Ness' regiment of Albany militia (Clavarack district). The members of the council of Appointment for the New York State Militia show that William Whitney was appointed ensign in Columbia County in 1786; Lieutenant the same year; Captain of Light Infantry of Tiogo County in 1792, Major in 1793, Lt. Colonel in 1802, and Brigadier General in 1804. He resigned in 1808.
William married Ruth Rodman, daughter of Joseph Rodman and Mary Liese West, in 1780 in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA. (Ruth Rodman was born on 16 Mar 1759 in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA and died in 1824 in Chenago, Broome, New York.)
