Gerard Robert Ellyson followed his father in beinga planter in New Kent Va, where he owned at least one large plantation. He was also a slave owner, having lived in the period before consciences became awake to the iniquity of slave holding.
Gerard was the first son of our Ellyson ancester to become an active member of the Society of Friends. He lived in New Kent, Va in Colonial days.
Before the Friends became actively consious of the iniquity of slave holding a number of members of the Society owned slaves. We know that our ancestor, GR Ellyson owned at least one slave because, after his death, in the 1750 MMminutes is mentioned in the personal estate of GR Ellyson deceased and the right and property of a negro woman named Tamer. Elizabeth Johnson testified that. "her father. GR Ellyson did on that day tha the Negro woman Tamer was born, giv the said Negro child unto his daughter Ursula."
In the final outcome of the controversy over Tamer, the committee reported,"on the whole we are of the opinion that Sara Ellyson, wife and widow of the foresaid GR Ellyson has a Good Right unto the said Negro woman Tamer and her child Lucy."
Gerrard married Sarah Spence.
