Joseph Rodman

  Research Notes:

Not a great deal is known about Joseph Rodman ,son of Joseph and Tabitha Rodman. The Rodman Genealogy by Charles Jones has very little and some of that is in error. He was born in South Kingston Rhode Island, February 23 1733, and removed to Columbia County New York at an early age, with his parents and family. He married there about 1757/8 Mary West, daughter of William West of Connecticut, and Maria Elisabetha Miller/Muller whose father was a Palatine immigrant. By whom he had 11 children.

He was a soldier of the Revolutionary War, serving in the New York Militia. He lived in the area of Nobletown, later Hillsdale in Columbia County. Records of the family are found in the Gallatin and Hillsdale Church.

The eldest daughter Ruth married the Rev. War officer Brig. Gen. William Whitney, not Whiting as stated by Jones. It may be that daughter Hannah married a Robert LaMont rather than Robert Morris as stated by Jones. Robert LaMont was a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Sullivan) LaMont. Hannah, if this is a correct marriage, remarried John Woolsey Aug 7 1815.



MARY WEST was born on Jul 20, 1740 in Newtown, Albany Co., New York. She died in 1799 in Columbia Co., New York. She lived in Hillsdale Columbia Co.New York. Children of Joseph5 Rodman and Mary West were as follows: i. Ruth6; b. Mar 16, 1759 in Columbia County, New York; m. William Whitney 1780 in New York. From Will Book B p 220, Ruth Park, wife of Ebenezer of Chenango, and widow of William Whitney of Chenango, petitioned for dower rights of William Whitneys land in Chenango, already partitioned to Joseph and Polly Lounsbury, Samuel and Rhoda Hardy, Benjamin and Ruth West, 1 may 1829.

A Land Deed in Book 2 page 9, Schoharie County New York, " Asa Rodman of Summit to Will Rodman, Asa in charge of John Rodman, a lunitic in the town of Fulton, sold property for $320--- 60 1/2 acres owned by said John Rodman and 3 acres south of Charlotte Road ( 1832).
