Joseph Rodman

  Research Notes:

JOSEPH4 RODMAN; b. Oct 1, 1713 in Newport, RI; m. Tabitha Mumford, daughter of Thomas Mumford and Ester Tefft, circa 1732 in South Kingston, Rhode Island; d. after 1762 in Columbia Co., New York. Joseph Rodman born at South Kingston Rhode Island, October 1st 1713, the son of Thomas and Katherine (Fry) Rodman. A member of the Society of Friends in South Kingston. Not very much is known about Joseph. According to the Genealogy of the Rodman Family by Charles Jones, "He moved from Rhode Island in middle life." It could have been after William was of age, or young William may have stayed with his grandfather in South Kingston, for he was still living there January the 29th of 1779.

Joseph was reported as marrying Tabitha, whose maiden name was not listed in Jones work. Other researchers claim her name to be Mumford, daughter of Thomas and his second wife Esther (Tefft) Mumford. Whether this is factual or not remains to be seen. For the present we will call his mother Tabitha Mumford. No more is known about her, but she was probably born about 1713, also no doubt of a Baptist background.

We list his death date between 1762 when his father made his will, and gave ," To son Joseph 100 pounds and best suit of clothes, he having had portion." Then in a codical dated Dec. 4 1767, on being informed of son Joseph's death, he wished the land divised to Joseph, to go to son Thomas and if he should die without issue, land to go to living brothers, they paying each son of Joseph 200 pounds and each daughter 100 pounds.



Children of Joseph Rodman and Tabitha Mumford were as follows: 5. i. Joseph, b. Mar 23, 1733 in South Kingston, RI; m. Mary West. ii. Mary; b. Feb 7, 1736 in South Kingston, Rhode Island. iii. John; b. Mar 24, 1737 in South Kingston, Rhode Island. iv. Thomas; b. Jul 1, 1740 in South Kingston, Rhode Island; m. Rachel Shaw; d. Feb 17, 1825 in Columbia County, New York, at age 84. Quote from Jones, in the Rodman Genealogy, " He was a pious, examplary man; a perfect model of a true American farmer of those days. He held Offices of honor in the town of Hillsdale, and died much respected". They had children : John, b 1775, d 1825, m #1 Betsey ( ), m#2 Rhoda ; Joseph, b Dec 15 1776, d Aug 19 1845, m Sarah Tyler ; Dorcas who m Benjamin Ferriss ; Annis, m Jesse Bullock.

Joseph married Tabitha Mumford, daughter of Thomas Mumford and Esther Tefft, in 1732 in South Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island, USA. (Tabitha Mumford was born in 1713 in South Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island, USA and died in 1736 in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA.)
